Waimati Vet Trial for Lice

Result:

Inspection of long woolcross bred sheep after jetting with Electrodip using the standard nozzle arrangement having no side nozzles. No lice found 42 days after treatment.

Object:
To prove Electrodip as a method of dipping for lice (Damilina ovis) in medium wool sheep.

Background:

An on farm demonstration was planned on this site.  At the time of the demonstration the sheep were found to have lice so veterinarian Mr van Schreven was invited to observe results of a dipping exercise.  The ewes were large in good condition and with 120mm ( 4-5 inches) of wool. Electrodip had not been used previously on this farm. The machine was standard, no side or forward nozzles.  The pump used was the 9hp Vanguard Davey centrifugal "Firefighter"pump.

Result:

No lice found

Re corner Farm Dipping Demonstration

15 sheep were tagged that had lice (Damilina Ovis) present at the time of treatment.  The lice counts were low with less than 1 louse in 10 partings. The sheep were dipped using a jetting race provided and operated by Des Carey of Electroquip.  The chemical used was Asuntol at the jetting rate. We calculated approximately two litres of wash was being applied during the 2.3 seconds the sheep took to go through the race.
The sheep were re-examined for lice at 42 days and no lice were detected on the tagged sheep.
